Square the belt ends perpendicular to the belt edges using a straightedge, squaring guide, or belt cutter. Accurate squaring prevents tracking problems after splice installation.

For belts with impression covers: Skive the cover 1" (25 mm) back from the belt end. Use a belt skiver or belt grinder with a carbide attachment for clean cover removal. Remove only the cover material (do not cut the belt carcass). Skiving exposes the belt's internal construction for proper fastener seating.

For narrow transmission belts (under 12" wide): Break or cut the carded lacing to the exact belt width. Lacing is scored for easy trimming along its length.

Clean the belt surface and remove contamination, oil, or debris that could interfere with fastener penetration and seating.

Equipment needed:

• Belt cutter

• Belt skiver

• Belt grinder with carbide attachment (alternative skiving method)

• Straightedge or squaring guide

• Cleaning supplies (degreaser for contaminated belts)

Position wire hook fastener strips on prepared belt ends according to installation tool requirements. Each lacer type uses specific procedures:

Vise Lacer installation

1. Secure lacer in shop vise

2. Position belt end in lacer with hook strip aligned to belt edge

3. Operate lacer mechanism to embed hooks through belt thickness

4. Verify uniform hook penetration across belt width

5. Remove belt and repeat for opposite belt end

Microlacer and Roller Lacer installation

1. Clamp first belt end in lacer using handle-actuated clamp system

2. Load face strip (specific to hook size) into lacer

3. Position wire hook strip on belt end against face strip alignment

4. Drive lacer head across belt width (manually for LW95/Microlacer; manually or with cordless drill for Roller Lacer)

5. Dual rollers gradually embed hooks into belt as lacer head traverses width

6. Verify uniform hook compression

7. Remove belt, rotate, and repeat for opposite edge

• Position belt in lacer work area

• Load hook retainer and face strip for hook size

• Align wire hook strip on belt end

• Operate closing lever to embed 12" section of hooks

• Reposition belt and repeat until full width is laced

• Repeat for opposite belt end

Installation verification

Check for uniform fastener penetration depth across belt width. Hooks should be flush with belt surface without protruding or under-driving. Verify straight, square splice alignment before inserting connecting pin.

Bring the two laced belt ends together, meshing the wire hook loops from each side. Wire hooks interlock in an alternating pattern.

Insert the connecting pin through the meshed hook loops. Pin threading techniques vary by pin type:

• Rigid pins (DuraStainless, Nylosteel, Nylostainless): Thread pin straight through meshed hooks from one belt edge to the other. Push the pin firmly to achieve full insertion through all hook loops.

• Flexible cable pins (Duralink, NCS): Use a leader assembly for wide belts. Leader assembly attaches a flexible pin to a smaller-diameter rigid wire leader. Thread the rigid leader through meshed hooks, pulling the flexible pin through behind it. Cut and discard the leader after pin insertion.

• Nylon Plus pins: Thread directly through meshed hooks. Nylon flexibility allows easier threading on narrow belts but may require leader assembly on belts wider than 36".

For Clipper lacing, notch the belt at the pulled section if necessary to relieve tension during pin insertion.

Verify pin retention after insertion. Pin should seat fully in hook loops

Inspect the completed splice for quality and proper installation:

Visual inspection checklist:

• Square belt ends with no angular misalignment

• Uniform fastener penetration depth across belt width

• Flush hook installation with no protruding points

• Proper connecting pin seating and retention

• No damaged hooks or bent wire from installation

• Adequate clearance for smallest pulley diameter in system

Functional testing:

• Install belt on conveyor with splice visible

• Apply light tension (approximately 25% normal operating tension)

• Manually rotate belt through complete revolution

• Observe splice flexing around pulleys—hooks should flex smoothly without binding

• Check for connecting pin retention and proper belt tracking

• Gradually increase tension to normal operating level

• Run conveyor at low speed and monitor splice performance

• Verify no unusual noise, vibration, or tracking deviation

Clearance verification: Measure clearance between the splice and the smallest pulley diameter. Hooks should not contact the pulley surface at any point in rotation. Inadequate clearance indicates incorrect hook size selection or installation error.

Monitor splice performance during the initial 24 hours of operation. Check connecting pin retention, belt tracking, and hook integrity. Address any issues immediately to prevent belt damage or equipment problems.
