Remove bulk material at the head pulley. Eliminate 60–70% of initial carryback with heavy-duty urethane or tungsten carbide blades. Belt widths 12"–96", speeds up to 2000 fpm.
Clean residual material missed by primary scrapers. Positioned where the belt leaves the discharge pulley to return the removed material to the main stream. Segmented blade designs conform to the belt surface for maximum cleaning efficiency.
Primary belt cleaners mount at the head pulley where material discharges from the belt. The primary scraper removes the majority of adhered material (typically 60–70% of initial carryback) before it travels to the return side. Primary scrapers can also handle the impact of bulk material.

Secondary belt cleaners mount at the point where the belt leaves the discharge pulley and begins its return path. Secondary scrapers remove residual material that the primary cleaner leaves behind (fine particles, sticky materials, and fugitive dust that primary scrapers cannot reach). A properly positioned secondary cleaner returns removed material to the main material stream rather than allowing spillage beneath the conveyor.

Belt width: 12"–96"
Belt speed: Up to 1500 fpm
Mounting position: Typically 2–6 feet behind the head pulley
Blade materials: Urethane segments, tungsten carbide tips, continuous blade designs

Multiple secondary cleaners can be stacked for applications requiring maximum cleaning efficiency, such as sticky materials, high-value products where spillage creates loss, or operations with limited cleanup labor. The first secondary cleaner removes the majority of residual carryback, and additional units provide final cleaning to achieve 95%+ removal rates.

All conveyors perform better with a primary scraper at the head pulley. Primary cleaners handle 60–70% of carryback removal with minimal maintenance requirements and prevent major material buildup on return idlers.
Add a secondary cleaner when:
Carryback removal must exceed 90%
Material is sticky, wet, or creates dust
Cleanup labor costs justify additional equipment investment
Product contamination from carryback creates quality issues
Return idler or belt damage occurs from material accumulation
Operations have limited maintenance access for frequent cleanup
Manual click tensioners provide adjustment with audible clicks that indicate tension level. Operators adjust tension during routine inspections based on blade wear and cleaning performance. Click systems suit applications where maintenance staff perform regular checks and adjustments (weekly to monthly, depending on operating hours).
Automatic tensioning uses springs or pneumatic mechanisms to maintain constant blade pressure as wear occurs. Automatic systems reduce maintenance labor in continuous operations, high blade wear applications, or installations with limited inspection access. Initial cost runs 30–50% higher than manual systems but reduces total labor over the scraper service life.
Spring-loaded systems are less expensive than fully automatic systems but require periodic inspection to verify spring tension remains adequate. Suit retrofit installations and budget-conscious applications with periodic inspection schedules.
Inspect blade condition every 30–90 days, depending on material abrasiveness and operating hours:
Urethane blade wear indicators:
Reduced blade height (replace at approximately 50% of original thickness)
Torn edges or separated segments
Hardening from heat exposure (blade becomes brittle)
Uneven wear across blade width (indicates tracking issues)
Tungsten carbide wear indicators:
Dulled or rounded carbide edges
Missing or separated carbide tips
Cracking in urethane backing
Exposed metal backing plate
Replace blades when height reduces to approximately 50% of original thickness. Waiting until complete wear occurs allows metal backing plates or hardware to contact the belt surface, causing belt damage that exceeds blade replacement cost many times over.
Maintenance checklist:
Verify blade contact across full belt width
Check tensioner operation for smooth adjustment
Inspect mounting hardware for proper torque
Confirm blade sections seat properly in retainers
Check for material buildup behind blade assembly
Verify removed material returns to main material stream
Excessive carryback on the return side: This indicates worn blades, insufficient tension, or the need for a secondary cleaner. Inspect blade condition first. If blades show less than 50% wear, adjust tension. If carryback persists with good blades and proper tension, add a secondary cleaner.
Noise or vibration from scraper: Check mounting bolts for proper torque, inspect tensioner for smooth operation, verify blade sections haven't separated from backing. Click tensioners should adjust with consistent, audible clicks. Automatic tensioners should maintain steady pressure without bouncing or chattering.
Material buildup at splice points: Mechanical splices create raised sections where fasteners protrude. If material accumulates at splice transitions or blades show damage after splice passes, adjust blade angle, select softer blade material, or specify scraper model rated for mechanical splice compatibility. Low-profile splices like Super-Screw systems create minimal blade deflection; high-profile fastener lacing may require a softer blade compound or angle adjustment.
Uneven blade wear: This indicates belt tracking issues, crowned pulley problems, or improper scraper alignment. Address tracking problems before installing new blades to prevent premature replacement.
Compact scraper designs suit conveyors with tight chutes, low clearance above the head pulley, or installations where standard scrapers cannot physically fit. Single-pole dual scrapers mount both primary and secondary blades on one support structure, requiring less space than separate systems while providing multi-stage cleaning.
Measure vertical clearance from the belt surface to the overhead structure, horizontal clearance from the pulley shaft to the side walls, and access space for blade replacement before selecting scraper models. Provide clearance dimensions when requesting quotes to confirm compatibility.
Standard scrapers orient blade edges for single-direction travel and will not clean effectively if the belt reverses. Specify reversing conveyor operation when ordering scrapers. Reversing models use symmetrical blade designs or bidirectional scraper configurations that clean in both directions. Diamond groove blade patterns provide consistent traction regardless of rotation direction.
Reversing applications include material reclaim operations, shuttle conveyors, and systems with bidirectional capability.
Belt speeds above 1000 fpm require scrapers rated for high-speed operation. Blade materials must withstand increased friction heat, and mounting systems must prevent blade bounce or chatter at speed. High-speed models use stiffer blade compounds, reinforced mounting brackets, and damping systems that maintain consistent blade contact.
Continuous blade secondary cleaners work better than segmented designs at speeds above 1200 fpm. The continuous edge eliminates gaps between segments where material can escape at high belt velocity. Verify scraper speed ratings match actual belt velocity to prevent premature failure.
Food-grade scrapers use FDA-compliant urethane compounds, stainless steel mounting hardware, and designs that prevent material entrapment. Smooth surfaces and accessible cleaning points allow sanitation procedures. FDA-grade models are compatible with food processing belts and other applications requiring sanitary equipment.
