Drum pulleys feature a solid cylindrical shell that provides full belt contact across the face width. Used in drive, snub, and take-up positions where maximum traction and support are required.
Common applications:
Head pulleys (drive position) with lagging for increased traction
Snub pulleys to increase belt wrap around the drive pulley
Take-up pulleys for belt tension adjustment
Bend pulleys for direction changes on clean conveyors
Drum pulleys use welded steel construction with end discs, shell, and shaft configured for maximum strength and balance. Engineered class drum pulleys incorporate profiled end discs that distribute stress more efficiently than older welded hub designs.
Wing pulleys feature radial wings or vanes that protrude from the shell surface, actively cleaning the belt by ejecting material buildup as the pulley rotates. The self-cleaning action makes wing pulleys essential for tail and bend positions where material tends to accumulate.

Standard wing pulleys use flat contact bars welded to end discs with reinforcing gussets. Available in CEMA, mine duty, and super duty classes depending on application severity
Belt wrap (also called arc of contact) measures the angle the belt contacts the drive pulley. Greater wrap increases the friction surface between belt and pulley, allowing higher torque transmission without slippage.
A standard drive arrangement provides approximately 180° of belt wrap. When this proves insufficient for the required torque, add a snub pulley positioned to increase wrap angle to 210°–240°. The additional contact area prevents belt slippage without requiring heavier lagging compounds or higher belt tensions.
Lagging selection
Drive pulley lagging serves three functions: increasing coefficient of friction between pulley and belt, shedding moisture to maintain traction in wet conditions, and protecting the steel pulley shell from wear.
For dry applications with adequate belt wrap: Smooth lagging provides sufficient traction with minimal belt wear.
For wet conditions or marginal traction: Grooved lagging patterns (herringbone, chevron, diamond) channel water away from the belt-pulley interface.
For high-traction requirements: Ceramic lagging offers 2× the friction coefficient of standard rubber compounds.
For reversing conveyors: Diamond groove lagging provides symmetrical traction in both directions.
