Selecting the right conveyor motor depends on load capacity, speed requirements, operating conditions, and system efficiency.
An asynchronous (induction) motor rotor is driven by induced currents and always lags the stator field, so it runs at synchronous speed minus slip.
Choose asynchronous motors when:
Conveyors operate intermittently or less than 4,000 hours annually
Initial cost constraints prioritize lower upfront investment
Standard efficiency meets facility energy targets
Application requires broad serviceability
Typical applications: Slider bed conveyors for packaging, flat idler conveyors for sorting, tumble-back conveyors for metering.

A synchronous motor rotor locks magnetically to the stator’s rotating field, so rotor speed equals synchronous speed (no slip) as long as it stays in step.
Choose synchronous motors when:
Conveyors operate continuously (more than 6,000 hours annually)
Energy costs dominate lifecycle expenses
Facility targets maximum efficiency and carbon reduction
Application requires constant torque across wide speed ranges with VFD control
Typical applications: Trough idler conveyors in material recovery facilities, distribution center sortation systems, aggregate operations with 24/7 runtime.

Motor efficiency impacts operating costs over an average 10–20 year service life. Higher efficiency motors cost more initially but reduce electrical consumption over time.
Explosion-proof motors are legally required in facilities where combustible dust or flammable gases create classified hazardous locations per NEC Article 500. Installing non-certified motors in classified areas violates OSHA regulations and nullifies insurance coverage.
Industries requiring explosion-proof motors include:
Metal processing and recycling (grinding operations creating metal dust)
Grain handling and agricultural operations
Pharmaceutical powder operations
Waste management with combustible materials
Document destruction facilities
Certification requirements: Match motor certification to your facility's Class/Division/Zone classification. Class I covers flammable gases/vapors; Class II covers combustible dust. Motor must meet or exceed facility classification.

Motor enclosure ratings define protection against solid particles and liquids. Higher IP ratings cost more but prevent premature failure in harsh environments.
