Drum pulleys feature solid cylindrical shells that create continuous belt contact across the face width. The cylindrical design distributes loads and creates the friction surface needed to transmit motor torque to the belt without slippage.
The primary drive pulley that moves the belt. Requires lagging for traction and often uses crowned faces to maintain belt tracking. Largest diameter pulley on most conveyors.
Best for: All pulley-driven conveyors requiring powered belt movement.
Positioned near the drive pulley to increase belt wrap angle from 180° to 210°–240°. Increases traction without higher tension or heavier lagging. Prevents belt slippage in high-torque applications.
Best for: Steep incline conveyors, heavy loads, marginal traction situations.
Adjusts belt tension to compensate for stretch and wear. Mounted on movable take-up frames in gravity, screw, or horizontal configurations. Prevents belt slippage and extends belt life.
Best for: All conveyors requiring belt tensioning.
Changes the belt direction for the return path. Non-driven position with lower loads. Often uses a flat face without lagging.
Best for: Guiding belt to take-up system or around obstacles.
Drive pulleys with integrated magnetic separation. Remove ferrous contamination from the material stream while providing standard drive functions. Protect downstream equipment and improve material purity.
Best for: Recycling operations, scrap processing, aggregate screening, demolition debris sorting.

Standard crown: Crown profile increases 1/8" per foot from edge to center. The raised center creates a natural belt centering force when combined with proper frame alignment and belt tension. Most effective on head pulleys with a tight belt wrap. Cannot compensate for structural misalignment or worn idlers.
High crown: Crown rate 50%–100% greater than standard crown. Used on narrow face widths and specialized applications requiring a stronger centering force for difficult tracking situations.
Trapezoidal crown: Partial crown with machined face for better total indicated runout. Crown applied only to pulley edges at the standard rate, while the center section remains flat for specific belt types.
Flat face: No crown profile across face width. Common when tracking is controlled through training idlers or frame alignment. Simplifies manufacturing and reduces pulley costs. Typical for non-drive positions like tail and bend pulleys.
Drive pulley lagging serves three functions: increases the coefficient of friction between the pulley and the belt to prevent slippage, sheds moisture to maintain traction in wet conditions, and protects the steel pulley shell from abrasive wear.
Smooth lagging: Dry applications with adequate belt wrap and traction. Provides sufficient grip with minimal belt wear.
Chevron (V-pattern) grooves: Wet conditions where water must channel away from the belt-pulley interface. Maintains traction when moisture would cause slippage on smooth surfaces.
Herringbone grooves: Aggressive water channeling and debris removal for very wet or dirty conditions.
Diamond grooves: Reversing conveyors requiring symmetrical traction in both directions. Suitable as spare pulleys that may be installed in either orientation.
Ceramic lagging: Extreme traction requirements with 2x the friction coefficient of standard rubber. Applications include high-angle inclines, drives with marginal belt wrap, and situations where belt slippage creates safety concerns.
SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber): General-purpose applications with good abrasion resistance. Most common and cost-effective option.
Neoprene: Oil resistance, outdoor exposure, and temperature extremes. Handles chemicals and weather better than SBR.
Urethane: Maximum abrasion resistance with durometer options 80–90. Longest service life in high-wear applications.
Static conductive neoprene: Prevents static buildup in explosive environments or when handling flammable materials.
MSHA rated: Mining applications requiring specific safety certifications for underground operations.

Bushing selection depends on shaft diameter, duty cycle, and maintenance procedures.
QD (Quick Detachable): Taper lock design for fast installation and removal. Most common specification for maintenance operations.
XT bushings: Heavy-duty construction for high torque loads and frequent reversing.
Taper-Lock (TL): Traditional taper lock design for standard installations.
Keyless locking devices (KLD): Friction-based mounting eliminates stress concentration from keyway cuts. Preferred for high-load applications.
All bushing types accommodate standard bearing configurations.
Class One (welded hub): Standard construction for most applications. Hub welded to the end disc.
Class Two (integral hub): Machined from a solid piece for increased reliability. No welded joint between hub and end disc.
Class Three (profile disc): Profiled end discs distribute stress more efficiently than welded hubs. Dramatically increases reliability and reduces bushing problems. Eliminates the most common failure point for drum pulleys.
Class Four (turbine end disc): High-tension applications with maximum load distribution capability.
Class Five (T-section): Specialty applications with unique loading requirements.
Profile disc designs (Class Three and above) eliminate welded hubs by machining the hub profile into shaped end discs. Loading stresses distribute more efficiently, extending service life in demanding applications.
Spiral drum pulleys feature continuous steel bars wound helically around the drum shell from the center to the ends. This design provides additional belt cleaning action without introducing vibration from intermittent wing contact.
The helical bars dislodge material buildup while maintaining smooth operation suitable for enclosed conveyor galleries and noise-sensitive environments. Spiral drums combine the full belt support of standard drums with partial self-cleaning capability.
