How disc idlers work

The rubber discs flex as the belt moves across them, creating a self-cleaning action that releases sticky materials, clay, fines, and wet aggregates that would otherwise build up on steel return idlers.

Gaps between the discs allow released material to fall away rather than accumulating. This design reduces material buildup on the return idlers, protects the belt cover from abrasion, and improves belt tracking by preventing uneven loading caused by carryback.

In most cases, you can provide the brand and part number of the disc return idler you're replacing to get a match. If that's not an option, follow these steps to identify the right disc return idler for your conveyor application:

Measure your belt width

Belt width determines idler roll length.

Verify the CEMA class

Calculate the required CEMA rating based on belt width, belt speed, and conveyor length.

Assess carryback severity

Determine whether standard disc return idlers, spiral disc configuration, or grooved disc configuration best matches your carryback and material buildup conditions.

Determine quantity and spacing

Space disc return idlers 8–10 feet apart on the return run. For severe carryback conditions, use closer spacing or place disc return idlers strategically where buildup concentrates.

Check mounting style

Note whether your existing return idlers use standard drop brackets. Disc return idlers mount to standard return idler frames for straightforward retrofits.

Confirm bearing seal requirements

Match seal specifications to your operating environment. Choose seals optimized for wet, dry and dusty, dredging and fines, or high moisture applications.

Select appropriate finish

Standard painted finish suits most applications. Choose galvanized or stainless steel for corrosive environments.
