Rubber rolls solve specific challenges that steel rolls don’t effectively address. Both rubber disc rolls and solid rubber rolls provide these benefits, with disc configurations offering additional self-cleaning properties.
Use one long center roll with shorter wing rolls. This creates a shallow trough that spreads material flat for picking, sorting, and magnetic separation operations. The center roll carries most of the load, which results in a lower carrying capacity than equal troughing idlers of the same CEMA class.

Use three equal-length rolls to form deeper troughs that contain loose material for bulk transport.

Belt width, material characteristics, manual access frequency, and clearance restrictions determine which trough angle you should choose for unequal troughing idlers.
20° trough angle: Flattest profile for maximum material access during picking operations. Lowest overall height. Best for feeding screens, manual sortation, or magnetic separation where workers need direct belt access.
35° trough angle: Better side containment while maintaining accessibility for picking stations. Use when material flow requires more support or spillage control than 20° provides.
45° trough angle: Steepest profile provides superior edge retention. Less common for unequal troughing configurations since the offset roll design typically serves low-profile applications.
