Worm drives feature a right-angle configuration where the output shaft sits perpendicular to the input shaft. This 90-degree power transmission allows vertical motor mounting, saving floor space in tight installations.
The worm design uses a threaded worm screw that meshes with a worm wheel, delivering high gear ratios in a single stage while maintaining a compact footprint. Worm drives operate quietly with minimal vibration and provide resistance to backdriving in certain configurations, depending on lead angle and friction characteristics.

Worm drives and helical bevel drives both provide right-angle power transmission, but they are suited to different applications.

Energy savings example: A 25 HP conveyor running 16 hours daily saves approximately $1,200–1,800 annually in electricity costs with a helical bevel drive (96% efficiency) compared to a worm drive (70% efficiency) at typical industrial power rates. The tradeoff is that it takes 2–3 years of use for a helical bevel drive to pay off its higher purchase price.
