When to choose rubber over steel

Rubber idlers solve application challenges that steel rolls cannot address.

Loading zones and impact points: Rubber-coated rolls absorb shock from falling material at transfer points. Without rubber cushioning in these zones, the conveyor belt wears prematurely.
Abrasive materials: Mining, aggregate, and recycling operations handle materials that accelerate steel roll wear. Rubber coating provides abrasion resistance and protects the idler and belt surface.

Corrosive environments: Rubber rolls resist breakdown in wet or chemically aggressive applications.
Belt tracking: Rubber generates higher friction than steel, improving belt grip. Increased friction coefficients help track the belt, particularly on return runs where rubber rolls shed sticky material that would cause mistracking on steel.
Noise reduction: Rubber dampens vibration and reduces noise compared to steel.

How to select rubber equal troughing idlers

You can provide the brand and part number of the equal troughing idler you're replacing to get a match. If that's not an option, follow these steps to specify the correct rubber idlers for your application:

Measure your belt width:

Belt width determines idler roll length. Standard widths include 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 60, 72, 84, and 96 inches.

Determine the troughing angle:

Measure the angle between the center roll and wing rolls. Common troughing angles are 20°, 35°, and 45°.

Verify the CEMA class:

Calculate the required CEMA rating (B, C, D, E, or F) based on belt width, material density, belt speed, and conveyor length.

Measure roll diameter:

Standard roll diameters range from 4 to 7 inches, depending on CEMA class. Higher belt speeds and heavier loads require larger diameter rolls.

Identify impact zones:

Mark areas where material drops onto the belt. These locations require closer idler spacing (typically 1–2 feet) than standard runs (3–5 feet). Impact idlers with rubber cushioning belong in these zones.

Check frame mounting style:

Note whether your existing carrying idlers use standard top mount (conventional bracket mounting) or channel inset mounting (low-profile installation for clearance-restricted applications).

Confirm bearing and seal specifications:

Consider rubber configuration:

Choose between continuous rubber coating (full coverage), rubber discs (multiple rings), or rubber cushion rolls (impact-specific). Disc configurations shed material better in sticky applications.
