Most lines use roller chain conveyors for heavy-duty streams and slider bed conveyors for light-duty streams. The best feed conveyor for your facility depends on material, volume, downstream equipment, and line placement. See individual conveyor pages for specifications.

Tumble-back roller chain conveyors

A tumble-back conveyor runs a cleated rubber combo belt up a steep incline. The geometry causes material to tumble back on itself, so the receiving equipment gets an even feed. For a steady, jam-resistant infeed across the materials most facilities run, nothing else we build competes with it.

A feed conveyor moves material into the next machine and controls the rate at which it arrives. That second part is what separates a feed conveyor from one that just hauls material across the plant: the equipment on the receiving end sets the spec.

Shredders take a beating, and so do their feed conveyors. Dense scrap and bulky stock require heavy roller chain and no-slip, high-torque sprocket drives. Our D4 infeed conveyor intakes whole cars to feed the shredder. It runs D4 Cat track belting on a railroad rail system built to carry that load into the rotor.

Sorting depends on an even burden depth, so material spreads across the belt instead of piling up where pickers or optical sorters can't work it. Choose a feed conveyor by material stream

Downstream equipment sets the feed behavior; the material sets the belt and the build. Abrasive, dense, and high-impact streams require roller chain with steel or cleated belting. Light, uniform recyclables run fine on a slider bed. The table maps the streams we see most often to the conveyor we'd reach for first.

How we engineer the feed

Once the conveyor type is settled, the feed comes down to a handful of variables we set to your equipment and stream:

Feed rate to machine cycle

Belt speed is tuned to deliver an even load between ram strokes or into a running rotor; variable speed lets operators re-trim as the stream changes.

Incline and cleats

Angle and cleat geometry hold the material on the climb and save floor space, sized to the stream so round or loose stock doesn't roll back.

Discharge geometry

The transition and discharge height are built to the receiving equipment so material drops clean instead of hanging up.

Loading method

In-pit for floor-level dumping by loader or skid steer, above-ground where a pit isn't practical, or a straight incline lifting material to height.

Metering control via VFD lets operators trim feed rate to the machine cycle in real time, the single most effective defense against bridging and surges.

Cleats and sidewalls hold loose recyclables and round stock on the incline instead of letting it roll back at the feed angle

Hoppers, chutes, and transitions direct material into the receiving equipment so it drops square instead of hanging at the transition.

Covers and guarding enclose transfer points to contain spillage and windblown material, keeping the line and the floor around it clean.

E-stops and pull cords are positioned for reach along the run and configured to support compliance with applicable conveyor safety standards.

Belt scrapers and wipers keep carryback off the return side, cutting buildup and cleanup under the line on wet or sticky streams.
