Conveyor Sprockets

Install sprockets on the same plane as the shaft. Misalignment causes premature wear, increased noise, and reduced power transmission. Secure mounting bolts to the specified torque values. Check chain engagement and tooth contact across the sprocket face before operation.

Replace sprockets and chains together when chain elongation exceeds 3% or when sprocket tooth wear is visible. Installing a new chain on worn sprockets reduces sprocket life to less than 50% of normal service life. Follow inspection schedules based on operating hours and material conditions.

Inspect sprockets during regular maintenance intervals for wear indicators:

• Tooth wear: Check for hooked, pointed, or unevenly worn teeth that indicate excessive wear or misalignment. Replace sprockets when tooth profiles no longer provide full chain contact.

• Chain alignment: Verify sprockets maintain alignment during operation. Monitor for lateral chain movement or unusual wear patterns.

• Lubrication: Heavy-duty roller chains typically require oil bath or automatic oiling systems, with lubrication intervals based on operating speed and environment. Consult the chain manufacturer for specific requirements.

• Tension: Monitor chain tension and adjust as needed. Excessive tension overloads sprocket teeth and bearing assemblies. Insufficient tension causes chain skip and uneven engagement.

Employee safety should always be a top priority when working with conveyors. Routine training reduces the risk of workplace accidents and encourages adherence to operational best practices.

Equip your conveyor with OSHA-approved protective guarding and emergency stops, and establish clear lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidents during maintenance and repair tasks.
