Primary scrapers are the baseline carryback control measure for belt conveyors. They typically remove 60–70% of initial carryback, preventing material accumulation on return idlers, reducing cleanup time, and extending belt life. Install one at every head pulley before evaluating whether secondary cleaning is needed.

Compact models accommodate head pulleys as small as 6" diameter with reduced mounting pole length or angled assemblies. Measure vertical clearance (belt to overhead structure), horizontal clearance (pulley shaft to chute walls), and blade access space before specifying.
Standard scrapers orient blades for single-direction travel. Specify reversing operation when ordering. Reversing models use symmetrical blade designs or bidirectional configurations with diamond groove patterns that clean regardless of rotation direction.
Applications include material reclaim operations, shuttle conveyors, and bidirectional systems.
Belt speeds above 1000 fpm require scrapers rated for high-speed operation. High-speed models use stiffer blade compounds, reinforced mounting brackets, and damping systems to prevent blade bounce or chatter. Verify scraper speed ratings match actual belt velocity to prevent premature failure.
Tensioning systems maintain consistent blade-to-belt contact pressure as blades wear during operation. Three primary tensioning approaches balance initial cost, maintenance requirements, and operational accessibility.
All primary scrapers operate with low blade-to-belt pressure to prevent excessive belt wear while maintaining cleaning efficiency. Proper tensioning maintains consistent contact across the full belt width while allowing blade deflection as mechanical splice fasteners pass.
Replace blades when the height reduces to approximately 50% of the original thickness. Waiting until complete wear allows metal backing plates to contact the belt surface, causing belt damage that exceeds blade replacement cost many times over.
Most primary scrapers mount to the conveyor structure with adjustable brackets or attach directly to pulley shafts using shaft clamps. Provide adequate clearance for blade replacement without removing large sections of guarding. Verify that removed material returns to the main material stream rather than creating spillage beneath the conveyor.
Inspect primary belt scrapers every 30–90 days, depending on material abrasiveness and operating hours.
For applications requiring maximum cleaning efficiency, combine primary and secondary cleaners to achieve 95%+ carryback removal.
Add a secondary cleaner if:
Carryback removal must exceed 90%
Material is sticky, wet, or creates dust
Cleanup labor costs justify additional equipment
Product contamination from carryback creates quality issues
Return idler or belt damage occurs from material accumulation
