Choose a locking mechanism based on shaft loads, thermal expansion, and maintenance access.
Set screw units secure to the shaft using two set screws threaded into a wide inner ring. The set screws create dimples in the shaft surface to prevent rotation and axial movement. This locking method works best with hardened shafts (minimum Rockwell C30) to resist deformation under set screw pressure.

Common for standard conveyor applications with moderate loads
Quick removal for maintenance
Set screw torque must match bearing size specifications. Under-torqued set screws allow shaft slippage, while over-torqued set screws damage the shaft. Verify shaft hardness before installation to prevent deformation that loosens the bearing.
Eccentric collar units use a locking mechanism that wraps around the shaft circumference. As you tighten the collar, it creates a uniform clamping force and stronger shaft engagement. This provides better axial load control and manages thermal expansion in one direction.
When to choose eccentric collar locking:
Applications with significant axial forces that could dislodge set screw units
Fixed-end shaft positioning requiring reliable axial control
Conveyors experiencing thermal growth requiring one fixed bearing location
Higher vibration environments where set screws might loosen over time
Eccentric collar bearings cost more than set screw units but provide superior holding power and longer service life.
2-bolt flange bearings are available in different housing materials and seal configurations to match operating environments. Select materials and seals based on contamination exposure, temperature extremes, and washdown requirements.
Cast iron housings: Standard duty for general industrial conveyor applications with moderate temperatures and dry to moderately dusty conditions.
Thermoplastic housings: Washdown duty bearing applications in food processing and packaging where corrosion resistance and hygiene are mandatory. Compatible with NSF H1 grease for incidental food contact.
Stainless steel housings: Maximum corrosion-resistant bearing protection for harsh chemical environments, marine applications, or extreme moisture exposure.
Triple lip contact seals: Standard for most industrial applications. Three sealing lips provide excellent dust ingress protection and moisture exclusion while allowing grease relubrication.
FloBack seals: Design improves contamination protection in extremely dusty environments. The seal geometry redirects contaminants away from the bearing cavity.
Labyrinth seals: Non-contact sealing for high-temperature and high-speed applications where contact seal friction would generate excessive heat.
For food processing conveyors, specify thermoplastic housings with food-grade grease (NSF H1 grease). These food and beverage bearings meet sanitary standards and withstand regular washdown cycles without degradation.
