Fluent Conveyors | Leadership in Industrial Conveyors Background

About the carpet recycling industry

Carpet recycling is a significant challenge due to the complex nature of the materials used in carpet manufacturing. The United States generates about 3.5 million tons of carpet and rug waste per year, with only a small fraction being recycled. If you’re in the carpet recycling business, we salute you—and we provide conveyor solutions to make your job easier.

In the UK, 45,000 tons of carpet waste are being recycled per year, out of approximately 515,000 tons of carpet waste disposed of.

In Europe, the carpet recycling market size is projected to reach USD 13.31 million by 2024, up from USD 8.4 million in 2016

In terms of recycling rates, California leads the way in the United States with a carpet recycling rate of about 28% in 2021, which is on par with the national average recycling rates for PET and HDPE natural bottles. This is significantly higher than the national average carpet recycling rate of 9.2% in 2018.

However, despite these efforts, the overall recycling rate for carpets remains low. The U.S. carpet industry produces about 12 billion square feet of carpet and rugs per year, with 91% being discarded in landfills, 4% being incinerated, and only about 5% being recycled.

These figures highlight the need for more effective carpet recycling strategies and technologies, as well as the potential market for companies in the recycling industry. Fluent Conveyors is ready to help our customers optimize their carpet recycling throughput with the industry’s most effective transport solutions.
